My wife uses Apple Mail (El Captain - MacBook) for email from her work. This is an Exchange server, her mailbox is rather large (25k messages in 4,6 GB). For whatever reason Apple Mail is not stable and quits several times a day. However the question is not how to solve this software problem. It is the reason why we consider to give the brand new Outlook for the Mac a try. Switching mail-clients is not a minor operation. Rebuilding such a large mailbox cost Apple Mail almost a day.
So therefor my question: Anyone having experience with the new Outlook for Mac, especially connected to an Exchange server. How do you organize and sync your calendar and contacts with your iPhone. Hope someone can shed some light, Tjerk Zweers.
I support Microsoft Outlook and while it's a more robust Exchange client than Apple Mail, It's also missing a lot of features you get in Mail. If you visit the Microsoft forums, you'll find lots of issues with Outlook 2016. Regardless, you will have similar issues with Outlook. It's the number of messages in the Inbox that is the problem. She needs to archive messages to subfolders to reduce the number of messages in the Inbox. Exchange Basics The Inbox syncs more frequently than any other and should be kept as clean as possible. (this is the number one cause of problems with sync).
But Outlook 2016 has removed this feature, claiming it does all this 'automatically' and there should never be a need for rebuilding manually. Well I ended up deleting the profile and re-adding it, which did solve the problem. Step 3: Copy your Gmail messages to your desktop. Mac users: If you are using Outlook for Mac 2011, there are other export and import instructions. When you're finished with this step, a copy of your Gmail messages will be stored in a file that Outlook creates on your desktop.
Do NOT make subfolders under the Inbox. Any folder with more than a few thousand messages is going to take some time to fully come down when you first sync your account. Due to the design of Outlook's sync engine (and how exchange works), you will see the 512 newest messages in a folder at the initial start of sync then the rest of the folder's contents will be back filled before you see any mail that arrives after this point. Outlook checks the server for updates every minute, any folder that has updates will subsequently be synced. Since Outlook has a limit on how many folders can be synced at a time, there can be a queue of folders waiting. The Inbox does get high priority so it will generally sync before other folders that also need to sync. Exchange likes folders to not exceed 2GB.
Anyone having experience with the new Outlook for Mac, especially connected to an Exchange server. How do you organize and sync your calendar and contacts with your iPhone. Add the Exchange account to your iPhone and check sync to contacts and calendars.
Outlook only syncs to Exchange contacts and calendars. Outlook does not sync iCloud, Google or other CalDAV and CardDAV services. Sync Basics CalDAV & CardDAV are protocols used by Apple, Google, Yahoo and others to sync contacts and calendars.
Neither Entourage 2008 nor Outlook 2011 & 2016 support CalDAV or CardDAV. All the points made by dianeoforegon are well made. With regards to iOS devices Apple Mail and Outlook for Mac both talk to the MS Exchange server using a Microsoft protocol called EWS - Exchange Web Services.
However iOS devices will normally talk to the same MS Exchange server using a different Microsoft protocol called EAS - Exchange Active Sync. Changing from Apple Mail to Outlook for Mac will have no effect at all on your iOS devices which will continue to use EAS.
IOS devices cannot speak EWS and Apple Mail and Outlook for Mac cannot speak EAS. The Mac and iOS devices do not want or need to sync directly to each other, rather they both talk to the same account on the same MS Exchange server and via that get the same Email, Calendar and Contacts entries. Just in case it was wondered, MS Exchange servers do not support CalDAV or CardDAV protocols. Neither Entourage 2008 nor Outlook 2011 & 2016 support CalDAV or CardDAV. Thanks a lot for your comprehensive response. Your advise on the inbox sounds like a good approach. Regardless, you will have similar issues with Outlook. The Inbox syncs more frequently than any other and should be kept as clean as possible. (this is the number one cause of problems with sync). Do NOT make subfolders under the Inbox.
So my plan is to start with moving the 50 or so subfolders under the inbox to to root level. I will do this through the exchange webmail interface (to make sure that I do not have to up- & download any messages).
I expect that after completing the move of the subfolders, Apple Mail need to rebuild its inbox. Hopefully this can be done without downloading 5 GB again If this works out well she can stay working with Apple Mail and enjoy the benefits from that like integration in the Apple ecosystem.
